Ava shuddered as she thought back on the game. She’d sensed from the beginning that something was wrong. Clammy hands and a racing heart didn’t lie. She felt as if she’d stepped into an alternate universe where dark magic ruled. Others had felt it, too. She’d seen the fear on their faces as they’d drawn their cards.
When it was Ava’s turn, she’d folded her arms across her rib cage and said, “I’m not playing.”
Up close, Mr. Trinkley’s eyes looked steely, more gray than blue. Or maybe they changed color according to his mood. He said, “Everyone is playing, Miss Wilkinson.”
Ava’s father always told her to stand up for her convictions, so she said, more forcefully, “I don’t like this game, and I don’t want to play.”
“I see,” said Mr. Trinkley. He made a tsk-tsk sound. “So you’re a quitter.”
Ava tilted her chin higher. “I’m not a quitter. I just don’t want to play this particular game.”
“Fine,” said Mr. Trinkley. “Don’t play. But I think Mr. Zwick will be interested to hear about your uncooperativeness.”
Ava gaped at him. She hadn’t expected that. And, oh, it wasn’t fair! She wasn’t being uncooperative. She was merely asking to be excused from an activity that made her uncomfortable.
Ava couldn’t afford to get in trouble with Mr. Zwick. The guy already had it out for her, and this would only make matters worse. As crazy as it sounded, Mr. Zwick seemed to resent her for being a good student. He was a newish teacher, possibly a little insecure. He constantly belittled her, making her feel like she was being a cocky know-it-all. She wasn’t, though. She just happened to be good at physics. What was she supposed to do, play dumb?
She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to overcome the cognitive dissonance that swirled in her head. It occurred to her that she was already playing would you rather, and this scenario was as unwinnable as some of the others she’d heard. Would you rather play a scary game or get in trouble with Mr. Zwick?
Mr. Trinkley had turned his back on her. He was moving on to the next student.
“Wait,” said Ava. “Okay. I’ll play.”
Mr. Trinkley turned around. When he smiled, his eyes glittered like moonlit ice. Something told Ava he’d known she would give in.
Her hand shook as it hovered over the pile of cards. Three times she reached for a card. Three times she pulled her hand away. Finally she took the very last card in the pile. Her throat seized up as she read the words on it. Oh God. This was worse than she’d imagined.
She stared at the card for so long that Mr. Trinkley had to prompt her. “Read the card aloud, Miss Wilkinson.”
Ava tried to speak, but her voice kept fracturing. “Would you rather—would you ra—would—” She gulped and blurted it out. “ ‘Would you rather go missing forever or have the person you love most go missing forever?’ ”
BLURB:
Pick a card, any card…
Would you rather be an amazing artist or a brilliant mathematician?
Would you rather lose your mother or your father?
Would you rather roast to death or freeze to death?
It’s a silly game hosted by a substitute teacher, an exercise in exploring the workings of the teenage mind. Twenty-three students make their choices, and the game is forgotten—until the chosen scenarios start coming true. Classmates Ava, Blake, and Charlie are determined to track down the mysterious teacher and persuade him to end the curse. But the clock is ticking, lives hang in the balance, and the foe they seek is more menacing than they could imagine.

She even lived there during one of them. She enjoys power-walking on days when it’s not too hot, too cold, too rainy, too snowy, or too windy. On indoor days, you're likely to find her hard at work on her next novel or binge-watching old episodes of Survivor, her favorite guilty pleasure.
Kim has had her nose in a book practically since birth. Her first story, written at age six, was about a baby chick that hatched out of a little girl’s Easter egg after somehow surviving the hard-boiling process. These days she writes in a variety of genres, including young adult, middle-grade, and adult romantic suspense. Her books are published by The Wild Rose Press and have won several awards.
